We wanted to make a thread dedicated to topics relating to the pricing, stretch rewards, freebies etc. so that we can make sure your concerns don’t get lost in the general comments and previous updates.
Jess and I have done our best to create products at a price that everyone can afford (so far we’ve kept all individual makeup items under $5) while maintaining cruelty-free and vegan formulations at the highest quality that we can in our range. To do that we have to buy in large quantities and keep our profit margins lower than most. What that means, is that every time we want to create a new product we need to make sure that it will ultimately sell in volume and we don’t go broke making it.
Why does that matter to you?
We meant it when we said that backing this campaign was being part of the development process and that means more than just helping with the creative aspects! How big this collection gets, how many colors we can make and reward tiers we end up with are all things that you are helping us figure out in real time.
Project Campaigns vs. Product Campaigns
With Project based campaigns the creators can set a budget based around how much money they need to bring their idea to life. Exceeding their goal means extra funds to work with and hopefully direct improvements to the project.
With Product based campaigns, or at least ours, we set a goal based on the amount of money we would need to do a minimum run of the initial products ($45 tier). As we get more pledges we have to order more units and if the order gets big enough, we are able to consider adding new products knowing that we will be able to meet the factory minimums for packaging and filling.
Some products cost more to make and others like Markie’s Magical Manicure are in fact a set of three products. While we would love to give something like that to everyone for free, it would end up being cost prohibitive.
The best way we could think of to add both smaller free products and bigger products or sets, was by using…..
Stretch Rewards
There are tons of ways we found that creators used stretch rewards and it inspired us to use them creatively too. As of now we are planning a mix of the following:
Complete Challenges - Create Additional Product Tiers
e.g. Markie’s Magical Manicure
Reach a Backer Milestone - Free Gift for Everyone Who Got Us There
e.g. Unicorn Crease Brush
Overwhelming Enthusiasm? - Non-campaign Goodies to Say Thank You!
e.g. Lisa Frank vintage items and Glamour Dolls eyeliner
Hit a Pledge Goal - Unlock New Colors and More at Existing Pledge Tiers
e.g. ????
As we add new products, there will need to be some higher pledge tiers, there’s no way around it. I wish I could tell you exactly how much the highest tier will be or how many products we end up with, but we came here to figure that out with you.
This is the first Kickstarter we’ve run and are open to any suggestions or criticisms that you feel will help us improve the experience for everyone.
If there’s something we can’t do, I’ll do my best to explain why here.
Looking forward to continuing the conversation,
Peter
